More traffic patrols in Oakley to stop yellow line parking

TRAFFIC wardens are to step up patrols outside village schools where parents have been parking on yellow lines.
As previously reported in The Gazette, volunteers from Oakley’s new community speedwatch group have submitted the registration details of cars parked at the entrance to Oakley Junior and Infant Schools, in Oakley Lane, which will be passed to the police.
Oakley and Deane Parish Councillor Bob Frankland has now said that this will continue and there will be an “increased frequency” of visits from traffic wardens, arranged by the parish council.
Cllr Frankland explained the reasoning behind the action taken, saying that the single yellow lines inside the parking area were intended to keep the traffic flowing and to prevent congestion in Oakley Lane.
He added: “The single yellow line opposite Jolly Olly’s was specifically designed to improve the visibility from the crossing point making crossing safer for the attendant and the children.”
He said flouting the rules by parking on either set of yellow lines during the restriction times increased danger to children and other travellers.
He added: “It is hoped that the small minority of parents that currently abuse the intent of these yellow lines will reflect on the potential consequences of their actions.
“It doesn’t take much effort to park a bit further away and it may save a lifetime of regret.”
The initiative has been backed by Sally Harvey, headteacher at Oakley Infant School.
She said: “The school is aware of the problem and is supporting the parish council.”
