A LORRY became stuck under a Basingstoke railway bridge, sparking an emergency services alert.

The incident took place in Bunnian Place, near Basingstoke railway station, at around 3pm on Tuesday.

A lorry, trying to travel through the tunnel under the railway line past The Queens Arms public house, became wedged under the roof.

Members of the public then reported seeing the driver walk away from the lorry towards the entrance of the train station.

Josh Terry was behind the bar at The Queens Arms when he heard a loud bang.

He told The Gazette: “I heard a massive scrape and a crack and that was it. Then I saw a man walking up to the station. It was quite a fast-paced walk. He had his head down and did not look back.”

Two Basingstoke fire crews attended the scene to clean up a diesel spill from the lorry.

Crew manager Phil Hoban said: “It was not from the vehicle itself. We could not get in the lorry, because it was locked, but we could see there was some kind of drum in the back, which had fallen over."

They cleaned up the spill before the lorry was towed away by a recovery vehicle at 5pm.

A 34-year-old man, from London, was subsequently arrested and is now helping the Metropolitan Police with inquiries into other matters.
