A CRUEL twist of fate has hit a couple whose joy was in the headlines earlier this summer.

The news of Becky Parker and Kevin Smart's name for their new baby went all round the world after they were featured in The Gazette in June.

In honour of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee the Bramley couple called their new son Union Jack.

But in September, Becky was told she has incurable cancer of the liver and spine and may only have months to live. And now they are set to wed after her devoted partner of five years set about organising a surprise wedding day. He has been booking venues, inviting guests, organising the catering and rallying their friends around to help make Becky's big day incredible.

He has also arranged for their three children Joshua, four, Oscar, three, and Union, five months, to be christened at the wedding, which is next weekend.

Kevin, 47, was planning to keep the wedding a surprise until the day itself, on Saturday November 10, but had to tell his bride-to-be as her signature is required for the legal requirements of marriage in a church.

Becky, 39, said: “I couldn't believe it when I found out he had planned everything. Getting married wasn't really something we had discussed before but with everything that's happened, it really makes you think.

“It's not until something like this happens that you realise what's important.

“He's thought of everything with the wedding, I just have to turn up. I am looking forward to the day but it will be very emotional, in lots of ways.”

Becky started suffering from extremely bad pains in her back when she was pregnant with Union. And unfortunately they carried on after his birth.

Blood tests showed she had unusually high levels of enzymes in her liver, but this was first put down her pregnancy. It wasn't until September when further tests revealed she had terminal cancer.

She said: “The doctors have said there was nothing they can do, but I'm taking chemotherapy tablets and lots of pain relief.

“I don't know how long I have left- it could be a month, it could be a year, it could be more.”

The couple, of Beckett Gardens, Bramley, will marry in village church of St James next Saturday, and will have their reception in Heckfield Memorial Hall with scores of their friends and family set to attend.

Kevin, a baker, said he hadn't found organising the wedding that stressful.

He said: “It's amazing how many people came to me offering to help we have had so much support from our friends and family.

“You don't realise how many people are there for you until something like this happens.”
