Police may strike over pay deal

OFFICERS from Hampshire Constabulary may go on strike after delegates at national pay talks failed to reach an agreement.

Police staff have asked for a 3.5 per cent pay rise for 2008-2009, however this have been rejected by the Official side of the Police Negotiating Board who have offered 2.235 per cent - an offer that could lead to industrial action.

Geoff Crowe, chair of Hampshire Police Federation said: "The officers we represent will be bitterly disappointed that yet again their increased performance with less and less resources is not being recognised by the Government.

"Yet again our pay award is likely to be delayed and even after we comply with the negotiating system the Home Secretary could apply a lower award."

He added: "However, this is about the principal of maintaining a fair pay system that does not leave officers wondering from year to year if their efforts will be rewarded."
