Sports complex under the microscope
A SPORTS complex in Basingstoke is in the spotlight after a £38,000 survey was commissioned into improving the site.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has hired experts to conduct a feasibility study into improving Down Grange, in Pack Lane, Kempshott, which has been identified as a possible training location for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The 45-hectare site is already home to an athletics track, an Astroturf hockey pitch, grass football and rugby pitches and shooting ranges.
Consultants Capita Symonds will ask clubs based at the site, such as Basingstoke RFC, what they need before reporting back to the council in spring next year.
They will also speak to other organisations, such as the Sport and Physical Activity Alliance, and look into possible grants for any improvements.
The study could mean good news for the Basingstoke and Mid-Hants Athletic Club, which has campaigned for better facilities.
The Let's Get The Club On Track campaign, backed by The Gazette, seeks to turn the Down Grange track into an eight-lane track all the way round, provide toilets and spectator accommodation, and buy photo-finish and electronic timing equipment.
The current track has six lanes with eight in the home straight.
Councillor Keith Chapman, Cabinet member for sport and leisure, said: "We are lucky to have such quality sports facilities in the borough.
"As a council, we need to play our part by ensuring we look at all opportunities to provide improved facilities for our residents, inspire young people to take up sport, and support the top-class clubs in the area to enhance their national reputation and the image of the borough."

ROFL! Is this a joke????
I got one, I got one ....pump up the Pack Lane 'speed cushions' a couple of feet and use them as hurdles.
Seriously though, let's hope that the local Brighton Hill 'Sports College' turns out some hopefuls. They are regulars at Down Grange being that their own field is too small to play sports on. That 10k they spent on 'bollards' would have bought piles of sports equipment and coaching . . .
