Biography

MP Since - 2005 Majority - 4,680 Born - 26/03/1964, married, 1 daughter, 2 sons.

Education - Brynteg Comprehensive, Bridgend. London School of Economics (BSc economics 1985).

Previous Occupation - Advertising executive, Grey Advertising Ltd (1985-90). Marketing manager for Texaco (1990-94). Company director for Grey Advertising Ltd (1995-99). The Rowland Company (1999-2003).

Personal Overview - She has extensive business experience both in the UK and Europe and has recently worked as a business consultant for public and private sector companies. Her main area of interest is education and has been a school governor in 4 different schools over the past 20 years. An active campaigner on local issues and appears regularly in the Basingstoke media. A regular speaker at meetings of local groups including business groups and over 55's. She first joined the Conservatives in 1983 and has held a number of positions at local level. She believes that a diverse mix of people with a wide range of skills are needed in the House of Commons. She has been a regular visitor to schools and colleges where she discusses different parts of the political process, something she was able to continue doing as an opposition Education spokesman. She was however quickly moved to cover Family Welfare in 2006, which is technically a shadow Health brief, also covering the controversial Child Support Agency.

Political History - Contested Wolverhampton North East at the 2001 general election. MP for Basingstoke (2005-). Member of the Trade & Industry Select Committee (2005-06). Member of the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee (2007-08). Shadow Minister for Education (2005-06), for Family Welfare (shadowing Health, including the Child Support Agency) (Children, Schools and Families) (2006-07). Shadow Minister for the Family (2007-).

Characteristics - Interested politically in environmental improvement and has been an active member of local environmental schemes.
