Disappointed with early decision by councillors

Sir.–We are naturally disappointed to learn that Eastrop councillors Stuart Parker and Gavin James feel they cannot support Basingstoke Town Football Club’s proposals at this early stage. We have
listened to what local people have told us and now we hope they can wait and see how we amend our proposals in light of that feedback before taking a final position. The club believes there is
adequate car parking on the site – indeed more than some Premiership clubs. On the rare occasion that more is required, consultation with neighbours – in particular Costello Technology College –
suggests they are prepared to offer part of their playing fields for overspill parking. The issue of congestion around school start times is something we believe the club can help with by utilising
the car park as a drop off point for parents, taking their cars off London Road. Access to the stadium will be from Old Common Road and, if local people would prefer, the club is happy for the
London Road access to be closed off altogether. Under the club’s proposals, a multi-use games area would become a prized sporting facility for local young people, as would the £500,000 of training
facilities – surely a significant boon to the sporting aspirations of thousands of local children? Analysis of feedback outside the Riverdene area reveals support for the proposals in wider
Basingstoke town is actually almost 80 per cent. There’s clearly a real appetite for the project out there. –Malcolm McPhail, Lamron Estates Ltd, Project Manager for BTFC.
