Poor cycle routes

Sir.–I’m responding to Mr E Wadman’s letter who voiced concerns regarding cyclists riding on the pedestrian area at the Top of The Town.

While it is easy to point a finger of blame at the cyclists, the blame sits with our council for their atrocious provision for cyclists.

Take for example a simple trip from BCoT to the council offices.

No cycle lanes from BCoT to Winton Square, and busy traffic lights to contend with amongst buses. Then where do we cycle?

Not directly to the council offices – as you point out bikes are banned – no, we have to ride down New Street back out along Timberlake Road, around Victory Roundabout and under the town on Churchill Way before taking our lives in our hands around Eastrop Roundabout and up the one way system to London Road.

I agree with your closing remark that “An accident is waiting to happen” but you may see it is perhaps waiting for a cyclist forced on to our busy roads by the inadequate provisions for them.
