Toilet ‘scandal’

First published in Letters

Sir.–After a long wait for a public convenience to be built adjacent to the three lifts, in Castle Square, Old Basing Mall, Basingstoke, we now find we have to pay 20p.

This is scandalous – such an exorbitant price. Therefore, one has to struggle as before to Festival Place for the free toilet.

I am a disabled lady of 69-years-old, and can only walk small distances or be wheeled in a wheelchair. I like to visit Castle Square shopping precinct, but I think the council appear to want to kill this area, just like the Top of The Town.

Let’s hope the cleaners from the outside of the locked doors for the toilets will not have to clean up every five minutes after people and children, who are desperate to go to the loo, as one poor lady did, wet herself, her dignity gone. For her, it was degrading and embarrassing.

I would have thought we are trying to promote all of Basingstoke town centre. I don’t think so!
