Praise for top exhibition

Sir.–Richard Garfield is to be congratulated on his very interesting Memories article in Monday’s Gazette recently, about the history of St Michael's Church relative to the present exhibition in The Willis Museum' s Community Gallery.

May I add that the team that organised this exhibition deserve every congratulation for putting together such an interesting and well presented display?

The large well written and illustrated display panels covering many aspects of the church's history and place in Basingstoke society have been professionally designed, while the range of exhibits include the Bishop of Basingstoke's cope designed by Atherton Fuller and the modern Christus Rex sculpture by Peter Eugene Bell.

Transparencies of stained glass from the church have been placed over the gallery window, and there are books from the church's parochial library now kept at the University of Southampton.

These include a copy of Foxe's Book of Martyrs printed in 1641. It was originally chained to its shelf on account of its high value and some links from the chain are still attached to the binding.

This is an exhibition that everyone in Basingstoke should see whatever their religious persuasion.

They only have until September 4. This will be a hard act to follow and it's a pity it isn't going on longer.
