Sir.–I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Basingstoke and Deane for recycling their Christmas trees.
This year, despite the snow, residents recycled an impressive 50 tonnes of trees, up 20 tonnes from the previous year. These will be chipped and used by the borough council’s ground maintenance and parks teams. This demonstrates to me a real desire for residents to recycle their waste.
This year, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council will be focusing on keeping recycling simple to help increase our recycling rate.
I know many of you still feel confused about what items can and can’t go into your green bins and our aim is to help remove any confusion.
Our residents’ magazine, which will be landing on doormats throughout the borough from March 10, will feature a four-page easy-to-understand guide on how to recycle.
It also gives residents the opportunity to sign up for a free e-newsletter offering top tips on recycling. Recycling doesn’t need to be difficult and I would encourage anyone wanting to find out more information on how to recycle to visit basingstoke.gov.uk/ go/recycle or call 01256 844844 to speak to one of our recycling officers.
It is important to point out that if every household recycled all the items that can currently be recycled in their green bin, we would achieve a recycling rate of 50 per cent.
–Cllr Elaine Still, Cabinet member for the environment and climate change Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
