Sir.–This whole saga about the next mayor is a right stitch-up.
How can the Conservative Party be allowed to nominate Keith Chapman on their own?
Your article made it clear that the mayor is nominated by people from more than one party to make sure that the person has the support of the council as a whole.
If the mayor is non-political that just doesn’t add up. One party shouldn’t be allowed to destroy all these years of history.
Basingstoke’s mayor has always been about more than party politics.
It is outrageous that the Conservative Party seems to be able to get away with this just because they have a majority of councillors at the moment and appear to be hell-bent on settling a score with Cllr Heath.
Cllr Chapman was mayor before. He accepted the process before, but now he seems to be going along with this vendetta. I think he should do the honourable thing and abide by the last 35 years of history.
No matter how much you like or dislike Cllr Heath, he is the rightful mayor next year, and the voters of Hatch Warren have elected him.
