Sir.–As chairman of the Basingstoke Voluntary Local Sports Council, I would like to acknowledge the incredible amount, and standard, of local sportsmen and women within the borough, many of whom were at the recent Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards.
A very high number of finalists were England representatives and the diversity of sports represented highlighted the wealth of talent over a range of demanding activities.
Alongside top-class participants, many at national or international levels, Basingstoke has a great wealth of officials and volunteers and has managed to have 18 finalists selected for this year’s county sports awards.
In addition, the new school sports awards highlighted the continued developments in sport at all levels of local education.
I would also like to thank everyone who assisted in making the recent sports awards event such a success, especially the various sponsors who demonstrated again what can be achieved by working in partnership.
Basingstoke has 11 sportsmen and women on track for the 2012 Olympics and many others in line for World and Commonwealth events.
The local sports council plan to work in partnership with the borough council, Gazette Newspapers, Destination Basingstoke and other interested parties around the town to co-ordinate support for this talent so if any companies wish to assist with support in some way, please contact basingstokelsc@ btinternet.com.
Local companies who have internal websites or newsletters which could promote local sporting activities or support some of the local talent should also get in contact via email.
The voluntary local sports council works in partnership with and on behalf of the local sporting community and is currently co-ordinating the 2010 Festival of Sport with German twin town Euskirchen where more than 200 sportsmen and women will travel for a weekend of sport.
A large variety of affiliated leagues and clubs are also planning to take part in the ‘Get Active Month’ in July around the town.
Details of activities are always available on basingstokelsc.org.uk.
