Plea not to park in residential area

Sir.– We would like to make a plea on behalf of a number of residents we represent who live close to the railway station.

Over the past three years, they have noticed a steady increase in the number of commuters who are parking on residential roads, seemingly trying to avoid the everincreasing car park charges the council makes. For example, the monthly ticket at Vyne Meadow has already increased by 17 per cent in the past three years – and if the council’s latest increases go through it will have risen by 22 per cent by next April.

When residents complain, the council’s solution appears to be to introduce a residential parking scheme, but guess what – the council then charges residents £23 to administer it (this charge has also increased by the way).

Hardly seems fair does it?

So our plea to commuters is: Please don’t park on residential roads – it’s a real headache for people who themselves are trying to get to work or school or just to the shops.

We have a lot of sympathy with the fact that your car park charges have increased so much of late, but please take it up with the council or ask your local councillor to lobby on your behalf.

–Councillor Laura James, Councillor Paul Harvey, Councillor George Hood, Labour ward councillors for Norden, Basingstoke
