Sir.–I was delighted to read in The Gazette that the borough council is to implement plans to help conserve the wildlife that we have in our borough and are to work in partnership with other organisations towards this end.
The River Loddon, rising to the west of Basingstoke and then meandering through the town and eventually leaving our borough on its eastern flank on its way towards Reading, is one of our most important habitats for many forms of wildlife and acts as a corridor for wildlife to move from one part of our borough to another.
The Environment Agency, fully supported by data provided by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Trust, have expressed grave concerns about the impact that building next to, or close to, this waterway would have on the wildlife of this area.
To compromise one of our most important “habitats”, thereby damaging it in perpetuity, would be an act of gross irresponsibil-ity and a slap in the face of future generations.
We have a “duty” to pass this borough on to future generations in the best possible order.
–Councillor Sven Godesen, Basing Ward.
