Still out of touch over expenses

Sir.–How ridiculous and insulting of Tory borough and county councillor Elaine Still to say that, “if you went through all the hours we put in, our hourly rate would probably be less than the minimum wage.” (Gazette October 22, reporting on councillors’ expenses).
Does the councillor know that the minimum wage for over 21s is just £6.19p? Does she know that if she was actually paid the minimum wage, she would have to work more than 18 hours a day, seven days a week every day of the year to earn £41,683?
The councillor should either apologise for her comments or provide evidence of her fanciful statement. I feel this just goes to show how out of touch the Tories are in Basingstoke.
