2:32pm Thursday 2nd February 2012 in Theatre
FOLLOWING the success of Les Miserables, Hair, Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Tommy, Footloose and last year’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar, the performing arts department at Queen Mary’s College present Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields’ musical, Sweet Charity from Wednesday, February 8 to Saturday 11 at 7.30pm.
The BTEC second year extended national diploma students are in the final stages of rehearsals for the 1960s musical. Set in the Fandango Dance Hall in New York, it follows the trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine as she battles to find the true love of her life.
Featuring famous songs such as Rhythm of Life, Big Spender, I'm A Brass Band and If My Friends Could See Me Now, the cast of 40 students onstage, 5 BTEC technical theatre students and a 12 piece band under the musical direction of Ali Willis bring to life the famous musical score.
Using scaffolding onstage, supplied by Champion Scaffolding, the students will recreate a 1960s atmosphere where life is tough and the knocks are hard, but for someone like Charity, there is always hope around the corner. The group of dance hall hostesses sing There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This.
Costumes are retro, the hall transformed and there is much to watch and enjoy for all the family.
Tickets cost £9 full, £7 concessions, £5 children and students and £22 for a family of two adults and two children.
