1:39pm Monday 19th December 2011 in Theatre By Emily Roberts
THE Watermill is perhaps the perfect location for Wind in the Willows, with water running alongside and around the theatre.
And the charming interior helps create an intimate setting, with the audience seated right up to the edge of the stage, their faces almost touching the actor’s feet.
It is this intimacy that makes the audience, particularly children, feel part of the show, and watching the faces of those in the front row, it was clear they were fully engrossed from start to finish, their eyes lighting up with delight and awe at the magical scene in front of them.
As the musical adaptation began, the cold, miserable weather outside was all but forgotten as the stage lit up with sunshine and sparkling water, and Ratty and Mole headed off in a boat for a picnic on the riverbank.
The adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s classic story about the adventures of a group of animal friends keeps the characters true to form, particularly the over-eager, manic Toad who darts about on a scooter, parping his horn.
For a children’s show, the acting is superb, with the cast managing to add depth to the characters whilst still delivering humour, suitable for adults and children, through their actions and words. I wasn’t expecting to laugh out loud, but I did, and on numerous occasions!
The multi-talented cast of just six were used to their full capacity as they played various instruments and characters throughout the production, with the songs effortlessly slotting into the story.
Naomi Sheldon gives an authentic portrayal of the shy, gentle but faithful Mole, interacting with fellow animal friend Ratty, played by Philip Buck.
Howard Coggins brings much humour with his interpretation of Mr Toad, displaying comic mannerisms in a high-energy performance.
The minute amount of audience participation feels as if it has been added to keep the children entertained. Judging from their faces, they already thoroughly enjoy the show without the need for anyone in the audience to get up on stage.
However, this could never spoil what is a highly entertaining show, perfect for all the family to enjoy together.
