MURDER and intrigue in Provence is coming to The Haymarket next week in the form of Strictly Murder, a play by Brian Clemens.
Mark Moraghan, best-known for his role as Owen Davis in BBC’s Holby City, stars as Scotland Yard detective Ross, who is on the hunt for a double murderer – a search that leads him to a rustic home in Provence, France.
Moraghan explained: “The play is full of twists and turns, but it’s difficult to say much more without giving it away! Safe to say that when I track him down, all hell breaks loose.”
The play is set in 1939. Moraghan said: “We act it in the style of old 1930s films, and there are some laughs – Brian Clemens likes to put in bits of comedy, and we make the most of the few gags.”
A prolific actor, Moraghan has been on our television screens in various guises over the past two decades, but his roots are on the stage.
“I started and spent a lot of years in theatre, so it’s where I learned my trade,” he said.
“In the last two or three years, I’ve been doing more theatre, but before that I had not acted on stage since 1990, and it’s nice to come back to it, and back to how I started.
“The techniques in theatre and television are very different and both have their merits, but in theatre the audience let you know if they don’t like it.”
By no means limited to acting, Moraghan competed in BBC’s Just The Two Of Us where he met BBC Radio 5 Live’s Nicky Campbell. The duo will be releasing a swing album, called Moonlight’s Back In Style, in the autumn.
Moraghan said: “I’m really excited about it. The songs are like old classics but they are new songs. It’s a collaboration – Nicky has written most of them, and I’ve written two or three.
“If I hadn’t been an actor then singing would have been a natural progression.”
Strictly Murder is running at The Haymarket from May 5-9 at 7.30pm, and at 2pm on May 7 and 9. Tickets are available from the Anvil Arts box office, on 01256 844244, or at anvilarts.org.uk.
