A MONEY-SAVING scheme by Basingstoke Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS) has been embraced by theatre-goers.

The society launched a “Subscribe and Save” offer in March for its November production of My Fair Lady – for which 500 tickets were available at the reduced price of £10. The offer was scheduled to run until May 1, but all tickets have now been sold.

The offer was launched after BATS was forced – for the first time in its history – to cancel its spring production, scheduled for May 2009.

But the company, which has a reputation for staging semi-professional musical theatre productions using local talent, turned a negative into a positive by launching the subscription offer, similar to a scheme run by The Haymarket’s former Horseshoe Theatre Company.

Bryn Hughes, PR and marketing officer for BATS, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the response and would like to thank our subscribers for their comments of support and for the donations that they have pledged.

“We are now looking at putting a subscription offer in place for our shows in 2010.”

Joanne Mace, former Gazette leisure and entertainments editor, is one of the new subscribers.

She said: “We have a wealth of talent in Basingstoke that should be supported. As one of these groups, BATS has always delivered productions of an exceptional standard.”

Due to grants administered by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation, local groups and organisations can apply to receive a grant between £250 and £900 to cover the costs of travelling to and seeing the show.

Further details are available by contacting Mr Hughes, on 01256 840287, or at bryn@ brynhughes.eclipse.co.uk.

Tickets for My Fair Lady, which is at The Haymarket from November 3 to 14, go on general sale on May 1, Tickets cost £15 with concessions available.

They can be bought from the Anvil Arts box office, on 012546 844244, or online through anvilarts.org.uk.
