“ALL the world’s a stage” is a well-known quote from one of this country’s best-known playwrights William Shakespeare.

But it is a saying which holds a special meaning for members of Basingstoke-based Theatricals drama group.

The thriving group run by Fluid Motion Theatre Company, and delivered in partnership with Basingstoke Mencap, has a bit of a unique edge compared to other groups in the borough.

All the actors in the group have learning disabilities and additional needs, but they find confidence and fulfilment through drama.

Artistic director of the group Leigh Johnstone said: “Theatricals is a fantastic drama group because it allows its members to face the stigma of mental health and grow in confidence as they work together and perform on stage.

“The transformation we see from the time people first join us to when they appear on stage in front of an audience of hundreds is really heartening.

“Participation raises individuals’ self-esteem among their peers, gives them new aspirations, and serves a real purpose in the community.”

Theatricals is currently supported by community and voluntary sector grant funding of £21,011 over three years from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

The money granted by the borough council allows the group to continue running on a weekly basis and produce a range of shows, from the popular annual pantomime, to performing the summer show - this year it was a hilarious farce ‘Carry On Mencap’.

The participation has a positive impact on the self-esteem of more than 50 local adults who attend the group, not to mention their families and friends who get to witness the productions.

One Theatricals member, who didn’t wish to be named added: “Because of Theatricals, when I go to work it gives me something to talk about to my work friends who share an interest in what I’m doing.

“I am becoming more confident in my speech because of drama. Instead of being stuck in the house watching TV, it also keeps me active and fit, especially when I’m dancing.”

The group meets Tuesday evenings at the Ridgeway Community Centre, in Blackdown Close,Buckskin.
