PICTURE snake-hipped Danny and demure Sandy as depicted by John Travolta and his co-star Olivia Newton-John in 1978’s Grease.

Now two new kids on the block – Max Harwood (17) and Hazel Baldwin (15) – are taking up the challenge of bringing their own interpretation of teenage love and angst to the stage in the latest production by BAOS Limelight.

I was fortunate enough to be granted a front row seat at a recent rehearsal and I am prepared to promise that the production will be, in the film’s own words, electrifying.

Director Richard Cox brings a wealth of experience and skill to this, his first production for BAOS Limelight. The challenge of a new director displaying a keen understanding of the shaping of each individual scene has certainly sharpened up the Limelighters’ acting and overall performance.

Richard, co-director Sharon Westwood and musical director Simon Eastwood have drawn even more out of the young cast for this latest production.

Basingstoke Gazette:

The big show numbers Summer Loving, Greased Lightning and We Go Together combine strong vocals and harmonies with energetic dance routines, skilfully choreographed by 15-year-old Zoë Blackall.

I also enjoyed the many memorable individual performances from these talented youngsters. I have yet to see the cast in full dress but I watched the sewing going on backstage and can report that the Fifties style costumes are looking amazing.

My only complaint about the film of Grease is that the characters seem a good deal older than the school kids they are portraying.

The youngsters of BAOS Limelight are much nearer the age of the students of the fictional Rydell High and as a result they bring a reality to the story they are telling which is both fresh and touching – as well as very funny in parts.

Basingstoke Gazette:

Director Richard’s rallying cry to his cast is to aim for a standing ovation at every performance – nothing less will do.

In my opinion, Grease will be a real half term treat and we will all be on our feet applauding!
