AUDIENCES for the five performances of this new Charlie & Lola production were very busy – quite rightly, given the quality of these shows.

Watershed Productions, in conjunction with BBC Worldwide and Polka Theatre, have made their adaptations must-sees, not something that can be said of many theatre shows for kids.

Their intelligence and wit captivate their young audiences, who are perfectly catered for by the fun which accompanies the action on stage, and subtle educational content is swiftly communicated via Lauren Child’s creations, sensible brother Charlie and his slightly less well-behaved, but very charming, little sister Lola.

This clever new show involves all four seasons of the year and also tells tales of friendship and of responsibility. Quite a lot of the second half is a presentation of We Honestly Can Look After Your Dog, one of the franchise’s popular books, where Lola and her best friend manage to lose Sizzles the dog, who belongs to Charlie’s best friend Marv.

In addition to pirates, giant fish, pink milk and the rest, the children of the audience were delighted by the magical swirling lights of the disco ball, falling ‘snow’ (which soaked those sitting right below where it dropped!), leaves and multiple cascades of bubbles.

The expertly manipulated puppets enthralled throughout, ensuring that there was a very audible sigh as a sign saying ’The End’ finally appeared.
