IT'S a big day for Chineham-based Oli King as today marks the release of the debut album of the band in which he is the drummer.
Oli is the sticks man for rock foursome The Rushing – whose debut album is Summon The Heroes – and the 22-year-old said he and his fellow band members are practising harder than ever to make it success.
Oli said: “We’ve been rehearsing and playing gigs the whole time, getting ready for the release. Our last four gigs have been the best so far. We’ve got a good set and are really together – it’s polished.”
The band – consisting of Oli, Kit Woolley, Andrew Simmons and Jonny Ross – all went to Bearwood College, in Winnersh, and after a few line-up changes, The Rushing as they are now came into being a couple of years ago.
“It’s been a good 18 months,” said Oli. “We got a new bass player (Kit) about two years ago and since then we’ve really got things going.
“The group have been together since we were about 16 years old – since we first picked up instruments. We played as a punk cover act for a bit which was quite funny.”
Oli describes their music as “quite hard-hitting, with a classic edge to it, a bit Guns and Roses”.
The Rushing have been on two tours, the first to America where their music had airplay on several college radio stations, and the second began in Bahrain with Bud Fest and the Fun Loving Criminals.
Oli explained: “We started the tour with that gig which was ridiculous. We didn’t even get the chance to play a warm-up gig, and it was massive!”
“We only got to see (FLC) sound check, although the lead singer was in a strop about the sound people, and leant across to us and told us not to expect much from them, which was pretty cool.
“And we got to hang out with the drummer in this bar where we had free drinks all night – it was quite rock ‘n’ roll!”
The quartet have also played in Swaziland and South Africa.
The band recorded a video – complete with scantily-clad women – for the album’s first single, Step Inside – which was released on March 23.
Describing the shoot, Oli said: “It was a new experience for us. We were quite shy but it was literally the best experience of my life so far. We got in the van afterwards and were like ‘that was surreal!’”
