Sophie plays for charities

A BASINGSTOKE bassoon player is performing at Cen-tral Studio on Sunday to raise money for two charities.

Sophie Crawford, 22, who is studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, will be joined by four fellow Guildhall musicians for an evening of chamber music, beginning at 7.30pm, to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind and Christian Children’s Home Uganda.

The young musician (pictured right), of Sheraton Avenue, Hatch Warren, was a member of the Basingstoke Wind Orchestra and the Hampshire Youth Orchestra, and was a pupil at Daneshill School, in Stratfield Turgis.

She studied at the Purcell School of Music, in Hertfordshire, before gaining a scholarship to Guildhall, and has since played with the National Youth Orchestra and Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and the Guildhall Chamber Orchestra.

Miss Crawford said: “I am passionate about playing the bassoon and particularly enjoy working with friends.

“This concert is a brilliant opportunity to play in my hometown and raise money for two charities which I support.

“Guide Dogs for the Blind open doors for visually-impaired people and there are so many children in Africa who do not have the opportunities that I have had.”

The ensemble – consisting of Miss Crawford, Kate Walter (flute) Louise Whipnam (oboe) and Fergal O’Mahony and Berrak Dyer accompanying on the piano – will play Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto, Hinde-mith’s Sonata for Bassoon and Piano, and the Sonatine for Flute and Piano, by Dutilleux.

Tickets for the concert cost £7 and can be booked at the box office, on 01256418318, or at centralstudio.co.uk. All proceeds will be donated to the two charities.
