IT MAY be considered an old-fashioned art form, but residents are being invited to discover how much they actually know about the opera.

A special night hosted by Basingstoke Choral Society will present a selection of the most popular operas which audience members will be most attune to.

Held at the Anvil on November 26, the concert will begin with the very popular William Tell Overture, familiar to those of a certain age as the theme tune for The Lone Ranger, followed by such wonderful pieces as The Pearl Fishers’ Duet by Bizet, the Chorus of Wedding Guests from Lucia di Lammermoor and concluding the first half with the beautiful Easter Hymn from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana.

During the performance the choir will be joined by three soloists, Erica Eloff, Alexander James Edwards and John Lofthouse, all of whom have performed in concert halls and opera houses around the world.

Themes of the operas which will be performed will include tales of love, hate, betrayal, treachery and death in a very similar vein to the popular television series, ‘Game of Thrones’.

The concert will also feature one of the society’s favourite sopranos, Erica Eloff, who will be singing the moving aria, O my Beloved Father from Gianni Schicci as well as the beautiful Song to the Moon from Rusalka.

No opera selection would be complete without a little Wagner and for this the chorus will be singing the Procession and Chorale from The Mastersingers of Nuremburg.

The famous Drinking Song from La Traviata is to be the penultimate number before we finish with that wonderful aria, Nessun Dorma, now always connected with Luciano Pavarotti.

For a night of classical music the Anvil is the place to be.
