CONDUCTOR Heinz Holliger returns to The Anvil on Saturday, 18 November for an evening of breathtaking music with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, one of the most renowned in Europe.

The evening begins with Mendelssohn’s Overture from The Hebrides, a vivid musical picture of the surging sea around Fingal’s cave, and is followed by a short piece by the concert’s conductor.

The programme features another piece by Mendelssohn, his piano concerto whose dramatic first movement gives way to a lyrical and tender slow section. The finale is a tour de force of fleet fingered virtuosity. Soloist is British-born pianist Stephen Hough.

Finally, Schubert’s last symphony is possibly his greatest masterpiece in any form, a supremely lyrical and imaginative work. The four movements are built on a grand scale and the musical architecture is handled with great care.

At The Haymarket, don’t miss The Ghost’s Touch, a haunting play based on a chilling tale by Wilkie Collins, author of The Woman in White, which runs from Wednesday, 29 November to Saturday, 2 December.

The play stars Mark Homer, best known for playing Tony Hills in EastEnders, as Stephen Rayburn, and Terri Dwyer, best known for her role as Ruth Osborne in Hollyoaks, as the mysterious Mrs Zant.

Widower Stephen Rayburn’s young daughter Lucy runs back to him from the woods in Kensington Gardens. He can see that she’s frightened.

The ghostly woman Stephen meets leads him into a web of lust and revenge that reaches out from beyond the grave, but who will feel the ghost’s touch?

And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the concert hall … the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ben Palmer, performs the soundtrack of Jaws alongside the film at The Anvil on Friday 13 April next year.

Sit back and watch the original summer movie blockbuster, with its Academy Award-winning score that made John Williams a household name, as the orchestra perform the entire score in sync with this masterpiece of suspense, in the ultimate film-with-orchestra experience.

Based on the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley and directed by Steven Spielberg, the nail-biting drama tells the tale of a small New England seaside community terrorised by a predatory great white shark during the busiest weekend of the tourist season.

The film has a 12A certificate.
