A LOCAL musician, inspired by his father’s illness, has planned a huge fundraising weekend event.

Three days of music will take over Basingstoke’s Sanctuary in London Street from October 23-25 and all proceeds will go towards Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Nurses.

The event is the brainchild of 27 year-old drummer Kurt Phillips, who has played music for many years now as well as teaching drums in the local area.

He and his family are well known to many musicians, having welcomed touring bands into their home whilst the bands are visiting the area.

Kurt, who lives in Eastrop, said: “The event was originally going to be a one evening show, but due to an incredible response via social media and the variety of acts that came forward, I have had to stretch it into three days.

“My Dad was first taken ill with cancer two years ago. He had been recently given the all clear but after a recent scare that the cancer was back and was terminal, I was inspired to give something back.

“I want to do what I can to help the people trying to fight this disease and the Macmillan nurses who help families struggling in these circumstances. I also want to say thank you to the community around who have supported us.”

Kurt posted his idea on Facebook and was astounded by the “incredible” response.

Those who’ll perform in town for the event include Peter Howarth (lead singer for The Hollies/Cliff Richard’s touring guitarist for many years), Lauren Thalia, Palm Reader, Employed To Serve, Ithaca and Yearbook.

In total, a minimum of 21 bands will perform from the Friday evening until the Sunday.

Basingstoke’s Inkpire Tattoo Studio has sponsored the event and will run a raffle alongside local artist Alex Simpson. Kurt concluded: “We had loads of bands who knew about the situation who wanted to come and play and support us or show their appreciation in any way they could.

“Artists that I had played for, recorded for and written for came forward, as did many of my students and their parents, and many of my friends who are in bands.

“As a result, we have three events: one night for metal; one for indie/rock; and one for acoustic, jazz, pop and blues.”

Admission costs £5 per event and £10 for the whole weekend. Tickets are available on the door.
