THE Philharmonia Orchestra will be joined by rising star violinist Esther Yoo at The Anvil on Saturday, June 13 at 7.45pm.

Recently named a BBC New Generation Artist, Esther Yoo first came to international attention in 2010 when, aged 16, she became the youngest prize winner of the 10th International Sibelius Violin Competition.

In 2012, the American-Korean violinist was also one of the youngest ever prize winners of the Queen Elisabeth Competition.

The concert begins with Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, one of the composer’s first great successes, using music written for a patriotic pageant in a region of Finland close to the Russian border.

This is followed by Glazunov’s passionately lyrical Violin Concerto which dates from 1904, a period when the composer was at the height of his creative powers.

The concert ends with Sibelius’ second symphony, written largely in Italy and which inhabits a very different musical world from the northern darkness of his first.

The sense of renewal and exploration continues through its four movements before building unstoppably to the final thrilling brass theme.

As well as Russian music, conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy is perhaps most renowned for his magnificent interpretations of the music of Sibelius, so don’t miss the chance to hear this concert.

Esther said: "I’m very much looking forward to coming to perform at The Anvil for the first time. I love working with the Philharmonia and Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy both of whom have been a wonderful support and mentor to me over the past few years.

"The Glazunov Violin Concerto is a piece close to my heart and I hope the audiences in Basingstoke enjoy it!"
