IT'S good when a Basingstoke band travels out of town, because it gives me a chance to sample new venues, new crowds and maybe new bands too.
This dtae, April 4, found me eagerly awaiting a solid ska-punky thrashing by those Ill Gotten Gains scallywags. Too good to miss, there were a fair few people who obviously felt the same way.
So it all kicked off and was every bit as good as was expected. Fast and furious with a fist in the air and a down with authority attitude. Far too cool to be an opening band.
Mind you, all the bands on this bill were quality and the second one on was Tree House Fire, who I have seen a fair few times before. More reggae and mellower in temperament, it provided an opportunity to chill a bit and recover after the opening obliteration.
There was a good crowd and sound quality was excellent and the venue was away from houses, so we could enjoy our live music without looking over our shoulders.
The headline band was Tyrannosaurus Alan, who I have also seen a number of times before. A mix of reggae and ska and punk, they were a worthy climax and got the biggest reaction from the crowd, in terms of dancing and skanking.
I don't know if it's because there are seven in the band, but they have a very big sound. All in all, a great, really positive evening, the perfect way to start the weekend.
Thanks to all the bands who played, to the promoter and the manager and staff of the venue - well done, everyone.
