THE life and work of a dancer, who overcame adversity and spent many years in Basingstoke, is being celebrated in a dedicated exhibition.
A Life in Dance at Fairfields Arts Centre marks the career and achievements of the late Alethea Liberty Watterson.
She was born in Fleet at the end of World War One, in October 1918, with a crooked spine and difficult feet, and was sent to dance classes aged three.
She went on to perform with the leading contemporary dance companies of the day – Margaret Morris Movement and Ballet Jooss – and also entertained the troops in France.
She then married and went to live in Gibraltar, where she taught Spanish Dance before moving to Basingstoke, where she lived for many years.
The free exhibition includes flamenco dresses and photographs of Watterson’s life and work. Fairfields, in Council Road, Basingstoke, would like to thank her daughter, Richenda Power, for all her help with this exhibition.
More information is available by calling 01256 321621 or going online at fairfields.org.
