Musical record-breaker's summer date

2:40pm Friday 12th March 2010

THE spectacular musical Les Misérables is celebrating its 25th anniversary – and it is coming to The Mayflower this summer.

The show has overtaken Cats as the world’s longest-running musical, and Cameron Mackintosh’s touring production stars Broadway and West End actor John Owen-Jones as Jean Valjean, Earl Carpenter as Javert and Gareth Gates as Marius.

It is playing at the Southampton theatre from August 24 to September 11.

Owen-Jones has also starred as The Phantom, in The Phantom of the Opera, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and Carpenter has previously played Javert in the West End production of Les Misérables.

The multi-million selling pop star Gates recently played the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, at London’s Adelphi Theatre.

The musical – which includes magnificent songs such as I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, One Day More, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables and Master Of The House – originally opened at the Barbican Theatre in October 1985, adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird.

This new production is directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell and designed by Matt Kinley, who was inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo.

Tickets to see the show are priced from £19 to £45 and can booked from the box office, on 02380 711811, or online at mayflower.org.uk.
