THERE is a preconception about us journalists that we are just “out to get people”.

Whether that be through reporting crime, or a story on the political agenda reporters can be made out to be the bad guys.

Well if your name is Johnathan Pie, then you probably couldn’t care less of what people thought of you and you’d stick two-fingers up while doing it.

Like the famous line in the film The Network, Pie is 'as mad as hell and he is not going to take it anymore'.

The foul-mouthed reporter is the satire creation of comedian Tom Walker, and on Tuesday, as part of his Back to The Studio tour was piloting a new show called Johnathan Pie’s Political Roadshow, at the Anvil.

For Pie, the idea was to become the new Robert Peston or Andrew Marr in the hopes the show will be picked up by the BBC and he can become like Fiona Bruce and present the Antiques Roadshow.

In a segment he calls ‘politics in the spotlight’ Pie is distracted by a phone in the audience and begins a tirade of how transfixed people have become with modern technology, before switching back to his ‘wheel of fortune’ feature which has the logos of each of the mainstream political parties.

Giving it a spin it of course lands on the Conservatives – prompting the newsman to point out all the party’s flaws in his opinion, with a picture of Michael Gove greeted by boos which Pie replies “it’s not a bloody pantomime.”

But Pie’s angry outbursts aren’t all just preaching to the converted as nothing is off limits, even the liberal lefties like himself get a bit of a grilling.

Of course Brexit is the hot potato but Pie blames every member of the audience calling them idiots for backing either side -on the one hand for unnecessarily destroying the economy and on the other for supporting membership of an undemocratic right wing trading block.

But a show highlight is Pie’s explaining of if something is “woke” which had tears of laughter running down this reviewer's face. Discussing the idea of “mansplaining” and being confused by the phrase "oh someone “aving balls” exclaiming “yeah I have balls but if you as much as flick them I’m f**ked.”

As the show winds down a real whirlwind of a final act has Pie completely losing his cool but at the same time speaking some truth in what he has to say.

He may be foul-mouthed and a bit close to the knuckle in some of what he is saying, but if Johnathan Pie was running as MP I’d vote for him.
