DANISH four-piece VOLA came to The Sanctuary last week on Thursday, much to the excitement of the waiting crowd.

Ably supported by Sleepwalker, Sertraline, and Brutai, they smashed the independent venue, keeping the crowd going and playing a mixture of older and newer songs from their albums.

The quartet of Asger Mygind on vocals and guitar, Nicolai Mogensen on bass, Martin Werner on keyboards, and Felix Ewert on drums thrilled the awaiting crowd with songs from their newest album Inmazes, with Star Burn being a notable highlight, and the group’s melodic riffs coming through to mix genres and not come across as a mess.

With a seamless blend from one song to the next, it was clear that VOLA were at home in their genre, which they have described as groove-driven melodic rock.

It was heavier than I was anticipating, but it really made the music come alive and give a rocking beat that sounds like no other.

Vocalist and guitarist Asger has previously described their musical inspirations and style as: “I would say that we are very inspired by artists like Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Mew, The Beatles and Another hit was Black Box from a previous EP, Monsters.

Oceansize, who all convey a sort of musical playfulness and an unwillingness to dwell too much by a specific genre. Other great influences are Meshuggah, Deftones, Massive Attack and Ulver.”

All of these and more came together to produce a unique sound that really creates a dynamic that you might not expect, with the audience not being sure what might be coming next. The contrasts between easier melodies and heavier elements really surprises and the musical mood shifts in a way that really works.

As part of the band from Copenhagen’s tour, they will next be going to Bristol as a part of the ArcTanGent Festival. Their album ‘Inmazes’ is out now.
