MUSIC is the language of the world; no matter where you are music will play a key role in forming a community.

So when three world renowned artists join forces, the outcome is a joyous one.

This is what the AKA Trio – Antonio Forcione, Seckou Keita and Adriano Adewale – hope to provide the people of Basingstoke when they perform at the Haymarket on Thursday, June 29.

These three musicians are all at the top of their game with acclaimed solo careers, buttogether as AKA Trio they treat audiences to a powerful and dynamic show of wit, personality and musical virtuosity. Kora, a 22 stringed West African harp, player Seckou Keita told The Gazette that because all three come from different musical backgrounds – Keita from Senegal, Forcione from Italy and Adewale from Brazil – they approach their music from different creative minds.

He said: “We come to it from different angles of creativity to give each member a chance to shine and make sure the music we play comes from the heart.”

The trio came together after Forcione had come to one of Keita’s solo shows and suggested they work together one day.

“I said yeah sure not really thinking much of it, but then we later found the time to compose together,” Keita added.

“Antonio was already working with Adriano so I guess I was just the final piece of the puzzle.”

Each member of the AKA Trio has their music steeped in tradition, but Keita says it is their job to bring that tradition into the 21st century.

He added: “I was raised on traditional Senegalese music, but I know that is not going to translate to every audience, so that is my job to make it accessible to all. We have to communicate with the audience through our music. We need to be able to convey anormal everyday conversation with our instruments.

“We want the audience to think they are part of the band.”

When asked what he hopes the audience in Basingstoke take away from the show, he said: “Joy. This is another level of joy, and for us to deliver something that we can give as a trio to the audience. I think a shared joy in music is the best thing you can have.”
