A SPECIAL costume exhibition is to open in Hampshire as part of the celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s novel Emma.
Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton will host a small exhibition of costumes from the BBC production of Emma from October 5 until March 28.
The television series, which was watched by millions of viewers when it first aired in 2009, starred Romola Garai as Emma and Jonny Lee Miller as Mr Knightley.
Jane Austen wrote of the character Emma, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like", however the lasting popularity of the book, as well as film and television adaptations, indicate otherwise.
Emma was written entirely in Jane’s home in Chawton and was first published in December 1815 by publishers John Murray though the first editions of the book carry the publication date 1816.
Further events and exhibitions celebrating the novel will take place throughout the first half of 2016.
