THE Summer Reading Challenge is to return to Hampshire's libraries.

Last year, over a quarter of all children aged between four and 11 in the county took part in the challenge, which is a fun and rewarding way to keep reading during the long holiday.

Children are challenged to read or listen to six library books between July 11 and September 13.

They can earn stickers, a Record Breakers Certificate and even a medal if they complete it.

In 2015, there is an additional opportunity to officially attempt to set a new Guinness World Record. The Reading Agency has joined forces with Guinness World Records to set a new record for the number of children signed up to the Reading Challenge at any one of 15 Hampshire libraries on the first day, Saturday, July 11.

Councillor Andrew Gibson, Hampshire County Council's executive member for culture, recreation and countryside, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge makes reading fun as there are things to collect along the way.

"Children's reading ability can dip over the summer and research by the Reading Agency has found that those who take part in the Summer Reading Challenge maintain, and even improve, their reading level over this period."
