PRIMARY school children from the area have been instrumental in creating a new musical reflection on the events of 1915.

One Hundred Years On takes place at The Anvil on Tuesday, March 17 at 7pm and has involved pupils from Merton Junior School, Preston Candover CE Primary School and Saxon Wood Special School.

The children have created new music, songs and choreography, taking inspiration from WW1 poetry and stories by Vaughan Williams, Kipling and McCrae, as well as direct accounts from Flanders fields and contemporary places of conflict 100 years on.

Leading the project creatively for Anvil Arts is composer and conductor Howard Moody, joined by a team of musicians including violinist Ken Aiso, drummer Buster Birch, guitarist Adrian Zolotuhin and singer Emily Blows, along with choreographer Emma Payne and director Colin Brown.

This project was commissioned by the Anvil Arts community and education programme.

Christine Bradwell, Anvil Arts’ chief executive, said: “We are really excited that our latest large scale schools project is taking place. The chance to be on the stage of The Anvil performing their own music with professional musicians is an experience these children will never forget.

“The Anvil Trust’s community and education programme works with more than 10,000 people around the borough every year to give them great experiences and wider opportunities.

“We look forward to continuing and extending it as much as possible in future”.

Following several weeks of individual rehearsals, taking everyone involved on a journey to the Western Front and beyond, the three schools will come together at The Anvil for final rehearsals before the evening performance on March 17.
