TICKETS are now on sale for the 2014 Southern Cathedrals Festival, which will be held in Winchester from July 16 - 20.
This annual event is a celebration of church music sung by the Cathedral Choirs of Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester.
Recognising this year’s commemoration, not only of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War but also the 70th of the D-Day landings, the theme is In War and In Peace.
Featured in two major concerts are Maurice Duruflé’s fine setting of the Requiem Mass, the haunting Agnus Dei from Britten’s War Requiem, Barber’s Adagio for Strings and a triumphant finale in the form of Haydn’s Nelson Mass, subtitled ‘In time of war’ but alternating between the dark mood of war and the rejoicing that comes with a victory.
