THE winner of the solo show at Sherfield School’s new gallery has been announced.

The first annual open submission exhibition in the gallery, which runs until February 26, features 23 artists, one of whom was selected by a panel of judges to win a further solo exhibition.

The school’s artist in residence Lee-Anne Hampson organized and curated this exhibition, and was on the judging panel alongside Ian McKillop, director of art at St John’s Beaumont and Dick Jaine, the head teacher of Sherfield School.

Basingstoke-based Luis Morris was declared the winner at the opening night of the exhibition, which was attended by almost 300 people.

He said: “Although I am a figurative painter, it is important that my pictures have a strong abstract quality. I try to let the paintings emerge as a result of acute observation, both of colour differences and spatial relationships.”

Luis has exhibited at the 2013 Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual exhibition in the Mall Galleries, London. He will be exhibiting his solo show at Sherfield Gallery in spring 2015.
