THIS terrific compact LEGO exhibition showcases more of the skill of the country’s only certified expert with the Danish brick, Duncan Titmarsh.

A wealth of treasures are on show and it’s great that this amount of fun is on offer to local families free of charge.

The open space in the exhibition room downstairs is littered with play tables featuring all sizes of the brick – thus suiting everyone from the little kids upwards – and provides an interactive element in a display which must box some of its other treasures for protection.

Informative posters around the room are really worth reading, and reveal any amount of gold nuggets of information. My mind boggled at the revelation that, apparently, just three eight-studded bricks can be combined 1,060 ways.

The origins story is presented clearly, noting key developments in the product - the first wheel was launched in 1961 – and the measures which are taken to ensure the accuracy of each core stud brick. The granules of plastic which make the present-day bricks are heated to a massive 455 degrees Fahrenheit before being swiftly shaped.

Among the sections to admire are the Star Wars corner – which contains the Death Star (3803 pieces), Millennium Falcon, X-Wing and Y-Wing starfighters, an Imperial shuttle and a TIE Fighter – and the fantastic Roman banquet which boasts a pair of unfortunate rodents alongside olives, meat and bread.

The huge model of Danebury Hillfort, the Iron Age site, is made of over 80,000 bricks, and other famous landmarks on display include the 1956 floating Lowry bridge in Southampton (30,000 bricks) and Portchester Castle (50,000).

Add to that the LEGO Technic crane, grabber and tow truck and the famous London landmarks and you have a pretty terrific exhibition option for families until it ends in January.
