EXCITEMENT is building for the official launch of Proteus Creation Space this week.
Maria Miller, culture secretary and Basingstoke’s MP, will officially launch the Space on Friday at 12.30pm.
Formerly known as Fairfield Arts Centre, the Creation Space was formally taken over by Proteus (the only professional producing theatre company in Basingstoke) last April.
Proteus are already utilising the potential of this valuable community resource, and invite you to Create, Experience and Enjoy everything the Creation Space has to offer.
The building houses a gallery space and fitted dance studio as well as a range of art and meeting rooms.
The weekend of the launch will also see the opening of Aristology, a brand new “cafe and makery” in the building.
The Creation Space has already hosted a range of events including a premiere screening from a local film-maker, a comedy night, conferences, exhibitions and a wide range of regular classes.
Mary Swan, artistic director of Proteus theatre company, said: “I cannot stress enough how exciting this project is, or how brave and positive the support has been from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in supporting our move into this building.
“At a time when local authorities are slashing cultural budgets first, and then questioning why their cultural organisations have disappeared later, this support has shown how a forward thinking local authority can help increase cultural engagement and strengthen the sustainability of the best artists in their locality.”
