REVIEW: The Bolton Arms

The Bolton Arms

WALKING into the restaurant at the Bolton Arms is like stepping into someone’s living room, with a large fire place and pictures on the walls.

As one of just three couples in the dining area, the atmosphere was somewhat subdued, but my partner and I agreed the gentle background music was preferable to hearing the noisier bar area, whilst enjoying a meal.

Being presented with three different menus was unusual, and a bit confusing.

One entitled ‘snacks, specials and nibbles’ contained a variety of options, including baguettes and jacket potatoes, which would be more appropriate on a lunch-time menu, as well as typical pub grub such as pies, lasagne and burgers.

The second menu, labelled ‘A La Carte’ contained a selection of more expensive courses, whilst the third appeared to be a variation of the ‘A La Carte’ menu, with a few differences.

Browsing all three took some time, but we eventually chose a sharing seafood starter from the snacks menu, which included prawns, fish goujons, scampi and salmon mousse.

I had not even cut my bread roll in half when our starter arrived, so I abandoned it in favour of the well-presented platter.

For less than £10 there was plenty of food, and it was all very tasty, particularly the salmon mousse, which spread on brown bread, was delicious.

For my main course, I chose roast breast of guinea fowl with roasted new potatoes and pea and silverskin onion sauce, accompanied by a selection of vegetables, whilst my partner opted for lamb shank.

They both looked appetising, and were tasty, simple and well cooked.

But unfortunately for this pub, being just a few minutes away from The Crown, you can’t help but compare the two, and the food doesn’t match up. For £16.70, my main course just didn’t have the same ‘wow’ factor.

However, the waitress who served us did, and was polite, friendly and solely responsible for making our evening enjoyable.

For dessert we shared chocolate bread and butter pudding with custard, which unfortunately lacked flavour and was overpowered by the dark chocolate.

The top wasn’t crispy, and judging by the short time it took to arrive, I’m guessing it wasn’t heated in the oven. But for £5.50, the price was reasonable and the portion size perfect, following a large meal.

For fancy-free, unpretentious food and generous portions, this pub is worth a visit, but it could consider lowering the prices and simplifying the menu.

I think robertspet8 has been uncovered ! Is "Robert's Pet" Emily Roberts ?!

I agree with Biriani (see Gamekeepers & The Hatch reviews)- there is something afoot

Not being satisfied with only referring to the Crown in the website blog, she has now brought the pub into the actual Review. How can the Gazette allow this to go unchecked - and why does the report in the paper differ to the one above ?

With the current Tripadvisor court case, I would be very careful indeed of loading weighted or biased information onto a public site, which is obviously open to abuse

Oldbasingpunter I have just read this review and your comment. I am not able to comment about The Bolton Arms because I have not been in there since about 1978 when I used to be a lunchtime regular. However, I can say that I think the comparison between the two pubs is very useful both to potential customers and the landlords - although, if I was a landlord, I would take just one review in only one paper with a pinch of salt.
What I am qualified to comment about is your comment:
You are warning The Gazette to be careful about using weighted or biased information but you do not apply the same standards to yourself.
I am not, never have been and never intend being Emily Roberts and as far as I know she does not intend becoming me :-) Poor girl, being accused of being a grumpy old man!
Both you and I are hiding behind a screen but I like to think I do not abuse this position by making false allegations and innuendo.
If you have any decency you will report your own comment and ask for it to be removed.

@ Oldbasingpunter:

Indeed ! Would the real Emily Roberts please stand up.

In the meantime, I might even pay the Crown a visit, and report back an unbiased review

I would like to clarify that all reviews on our website and in our paper are genuine.

I would also like to clarify that I am Emily Roberts and I am not posting comments on this website 'undercover' as some might suggest.

I admire your ambition, and I hope The Crown will make you feel welcome, but it is impossible for one review by one person to be unbiased. Everyone of us has inbuilt prejudices. Some might like a bright, lively atmosphere and others might prefer a quiet, comfy restaurant. Some people even like fast food I hear :-) Each to his own, but we will all judge a place on how it compares to our own standards/prejudices and how we are feeling on the night.
That is why I said the landlords should not take one review too seriously.
For myself I am prepared to admit that I am human and very much influenced by both my conscious and unconscious prejudices. In all my comments I have tried to be give honest opinions but I accept others might disagree with them - it would be boring if they did not. But I do object to being the target of false accusations and allegations from people using a cloak of anonimity to hide behind. I also choose to hide my true identity but I hope that I never abuse this position by making false claims or allegations.
Attack my arguments but dont make unfounded attacks against me.
So visit The Crown and/or The Bolton Arms and post your honest opinions.

I do not know which one is worse - Robertspet8 trying to make out he's virginal and pure, or, Emily Roberts by trying to "clear her name"
No other review mentions another nearby pub ? Ooh, Emily, slipped up there, didn't we ?
As for Robertspet8 put his/her name into google and look at the inaccuracies that this person makes - see Andover and Winchester papers - he/she evens apologies for being so quick and clumsy an oaf
As for being a "grumpy old man" is this a ruse ?!
And as for your anonimity - who are you Robertspet8 ? I have lived in the village (of Old Basing) for some 30 years and am sure I have never met a more ignorant, self esteemed idiot than you- what's your real name ?!!!
As for Biriana - hope you enjoy your trip to the Crown as they as nice people

Oldbasingpunter, to pick you up on a couple of points:
I certainly make errors and you will see in some of my comments that I have admitted as much when they have been pointed out to me.
Regarding the Andover and Winchester papers, I have never knowingly contributed a comment to either of those publications. I could not find them using google, but if you say they are there I believe you. All I can think is that they are sister papers to The Gazette and the content has been shared. If you send me details of the inaccuracies I will be happy to admit to any errors.
I have never lived in Old Basing.
Finally what is it about these comment sections which brings out the worst in some people? There are several contributors, and I include you in these, who resort to insults and innuendo rather than using reason to argue their case. I think you should read the undertaking you make when you post a comment, i.e. Remember you are personally responsible for what you post on this site and must abide by the site terms. Do not post anything that is false, abusive or malicious.

Oldbasingpunter you make no sense at all. You're accusing others and yet you sound like you're from the Bolton Arms - why are you so upset on its behalf? Having been to The Crown many times, my family and I have always found it to be a brilliant venue. It's in direct competition with the BA which is probably why this person has mentioned it!! It needs to up its game now the Crown is so good. You even say the Crown are "nice people".
Are you going to accuse people on TripAdvisor, where the Crown is always either the most popular restaurant in Basingstoke or number two, of bias too? Your references to the Hatch and Gamekeepers make no sense either - what's your problem with those reviews? Reviews are people's opinion and there's nothing in here which is horrible about the BA in any unfair way.

So let us get this clear - when you support oldbasingpunter’s point of view it is a balanced contribution but when raysie62 offers an alternative point of view it is part of an orchestrated campaign?
Do you think everyone who does not support you is part of a conspiracy?
But remember, just because you are paranoid it does not mean that whole world is not out to get you :-)

robertspet8:

I would like to resond but sadly your posts and those of your various aliases have become so risible as to defy further send up and I must therefore bid you adieu.

I can't say it hasn't been fun though

I agree with Biriani (who I don't even know), "orchestrated" is the perfect word

Bye, bye Robertspet8, we now have your long lost brother, Raysie62, to contend with

Good (early) morning Ladies and Gentlemen
I have no need to hide behind anonymity as my wife and I own the Bolton Arms and, everything we say is true and factual - my name is Duncan Kerr and, my personal email address is duncan@thebolton.com

I received an email tonight re-directing me to this website
We are somewhat surprised at the level of attention that a simple post on a blog has achieved and, are stunned it could create such a feeling of anomosity between people who clearly do not know each other - one of the evils of the new fangled internet ?
Firstly, I was one of the first people to visit and welcome John Barnes to the village and wish him (and his partners) all the best in taking over The Crown. After all this was his foray into the world of Landlord. The Bolton Arms was our first foray also
I offered help and assistance to John if he required such and, subsequently, he has helped me when I have asked for assistance. As far as I am aware, the alleged "competition" between the two pubs does not exist. I manage the Bolton Arms in a specific way and John runs The Crown in the way he sees fit - we both share certain customers, but isn't that natural in a small village ?
Everyone has the right to their own opinion (thank God) and so it may remain
John and colleagues have eaten at the Bolton Arms on several occasions and, my wife and I have eaten at The Crown on several occasions - so what is the problem ?
A blog is a blog, life is too short to engage in cybernet bitterness
There is, and always will be, a "rivalry" between local pubs, but please do not allow your rivalry to put off potential customers to either destination
I would suggest if any of you "bloggers" require confirmation of these points, please speak to either myself or John on your next visit to the relevant establishment
My wife and I's biggest pleasure throughout our four year tenure, in addition to building a worthwhile company, is that we have created an opportunity for (to date) for 30 +/- local young people to experience their first taste of work and have trained and assisted them on how to cope with a demanding public - something that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives
How unimportant a blog seems in comparison
All you bloggers are welcome - just make yourself known !
Cheers,
Duncan A Kerr

To Duncan A Kerr,
Please accept my apology. I should have ignored the first comment and not have bitten (no pun intended).
I offer my unreserved apology to you, your wife, John Barnes and his partner and Emily Roberts for any embarrassment or discomfort caused by my comments. My only intention was to clear my name, which was a pointless exercise because I have chosen to remain anonomous. In future I will try to ignore personal comments and just concentrate on the issues, difficult though it is to bite my tongue (pun intended).
