BELOVED British cook Mary Berry has written an unbelievable 70 cookbooks which have sold in their millions to her devoted fans.

It’s no surprise that they keep on coming, given the boost to her profile and popularity provided by BBC’s hugely successful The Great British Bake Off, and it’s also no surprise the her old tomes are being reinvented for the modern age by those who own their copyright.

Mary Berry At Home was first published quite a number of years ago, and it has been substantially reinvented for this pretty BBC Books release. It has been co-written with her assistant of 23 years Lucy Young, who she refers to as “my closest friend”, and who appears in many of the book’s photographs alongside Mary.

The new At Home contains all of the original’s recipes – including her famous Canterbury apple tart – adding the modifications she has made to them since, plus 60 brand new recipes.

Mary writes in her introduction that her aim is that “you will find inspiration and help in this book, whenever you need it and for whatever occasion”, and it targets eating at home with your family and those times when you entertain guests.

She recognises that times have changed since the book was first released, remarking “I wanted to cut out all the long processes to provide simple food for busy families, using fresh ingredients rather than packets and convenience foods”, but concludes that “homecooking has never been easier” because of the range of ingredients now widely available in local supermarkets.

Chapters follow a three-course dinner template, moving through starters, mains, sides and desserts, before touching on nibbles and drinks ideas and ending with the short and sweet section Time for Tea.

She explains that “I couldn’t revise At Home without adding a baking chapter...so this new edition has an entire chapter devoted to cakes bakes and sweet treats.”

Its contents, which she and Lucy recommend for morning coffee, fetes, fairs and afternoon tea include traybakes, cakes, cupcakes, scones and sandwiches.

By breathing new life into this volume of her tried and tested recipes, Mary has surely ensured that her classics will live on to enchant a new generation.
