A POEM written for Basingstoke Discovery Centre (BDC) will be unveiled on the library’s wall next week.

During a two month residency in BDC, poet Andrew McMillan worked with a number of different local groups promoting poetry.

He was given a very comfortable home in the Festival Place centre where he led writing workshops with children and adults, in addition to venturing out to specially planned events around Basingstoke.

Andrew also led sessions at Brighton Hill Community College and at Fairfield Primary School's Book Week, in addition to visiting the Willis Museum and working with Basingstoke Writers' Circle.

He also provided one-to-one advisory sessions for a selected group of local writers, and worked with both BDC’s 'Learning at the Centre' project and the Stroke Association, using the power of poetry in a partnership that will continue.

Andrew was asked to write a poem that would be printed on the wall of the Discovery Centre as a lasting reminder of his time with BDC and for future readers to enjoy. He was asked to write a poem inspired by books, reading and libraries, and Drought is the resulting work.

The poem will be unveiled in BDC on Tuesday, June 19 at 6pm. Further information is available from BDC on 01256 478670.
