IN THE modern workplace, nine out of 10 jobs require IT, but more than 25 per cent of employers say their employees have inadequate IT skills, according to e-Skills, the sector skills council for IT.

Businesses spend thousands of pounds on IT to win a commercial advantage, and low productivity in the use of computers is an expensive waste.

Perhaps the reason so many of us do not use IT as well as we could is that we are among the eight million employees with no formal IT training.

Most of us seem to learn IT skills though osmosis – learning from each other or through trial and error at work.

An ITQ qualification helps train staff in the skills the company needs. Used by all sectors of business and industry, it is a qualification that can be customised.

People or companies create their own ITQ, so each employee may learn and be assessed on tasks they do at work.

Learning support assistant Fiona Tompsett took the ITQ so she could provide IT support for her pupils.

She said: “I have gained confidence in using IT and have been able to pass on my new skills to other staff at the school.

“You also get a recognised qualification, which gives you the confidence to use IT at work.”

The Chineham Learning Centre specialises in the ITQ. It is open from 9am to 9pm from Monday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm on Friday, and 9am to 1pm on Saturday.

The centre offers an adult learning environment for business users and has an appointment system to guarantee that each person can train at the time he or she wishes.

Individuals and small groups work on word-processing, spreadsheets, internet, e-mail, artwork and imaging, databases and present-ation graphics.

There are no tuition fees for the ITQ course at Chineham. A registration fee of approximately £45 may be payable according to the circumstances of the employee.
