Offering food for thought

IN SEPTEMBER, each member of a research and development team from Air Products PLC successfully passed the Level 2 award in food safety delivered by BCOT.

Air Products, based in Chineham, is a leading provider of gases, equipment, services and solutions to the global food industry and is seemingly an unusual candidate for a mainstream food industry qualification designed for use where food is prepared, cooked or handled.

But since 1965, Air Products has helped pioneer the use of liquid nitrogen for ultra-fast food freezing and supplied food industry customers with the latest gas-based technologies, for use in the bakery, dairy, beverage, snack, fruit and vegetable, seafood, poultry, meat, ready meal and prepared foods sectors.

In fact, the company’s products have a use with almost everything we eat.

Jon Trembley, head of the centre of excellence (cryogenic applications) at Air Products, is delighted with his team’s success.

He said: “The course was extremely useful in that it helped Air Products’ researchers to understand the food hygiene and safety requirements they must take into account when designing equipment for the food manufacturing industry.” The Level 2 award in food safety provides food hygiene knowledge for all food handlers in catering, manufacturing or the retail food sector.

The topics covered include legislation, food safety, principles of safe food storage and temperature control.
