BCoT event backs apprenticeships

A SPECIAL event to provide people with information about apprenticeships will be held at Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) next month.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, from February 6-10, the college, in Worting Road, will offer young people, in particular, the chance to find out more about apprenticeship programmes as an alternative career choice.

They will be able to speak to employers, specialist training consultants and experienced staff.

BCoT is also inviting employers who have not offered apprenticeships in the past to go along and meet the team at the college, and find out the benefits of hiring an apprentice for their business.

Apprentices are employees who earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff in businesses to gain job specific skills and nationally recognised qualifications.

An apprenticeship can take between one and four years to complete, depending on the level of qualification, the apprentice’s ability and the industry sector.

There are more than 200 different types on offer, covering more than 1,200 job roles in a range of sectors including engineering, nursing and accountancy.

Training for 16 to 18-year-old apprentices is fully funded by the Government, and the minimum wage is £2.60 an hour.

Last year, The Gazette and BCoT supported a campaign to recruit 100 apprentices in 100 days, which, as seen above, resulted in a huge success with more than 150 people securing a post, many with Basingstoke companies.

The apprenticeship event at BCoT will take place on February 7, between 6pm and 8pm. For more information contact Monica Lubbock-Smith or Yvonne Whatley on 01256 306237.
