YOUNG newshounds have produced their own school paper – and it sold an impressive 80 copies on its first day of publication.
St Mary’s News is a brand new paper that will come out at St Mary’s Junior School, in Old Basing, every half-term, thanks to a team of 12 dedicated reporters.
The editorial team were selected by staff at the school, in Belle Vue Road, and they meet every Tuesday to work on their stories for the next edition.
Matthew Haydon, nine, said: “We interview people, and everyone is in charge of different things. We choose a subject, so I did sport and a Year 5 topic about spies. We write on the computer and then the article gets taken off with a memory stick and printed.”
The paper costs 30p and is taken around the classrooms for pupils to buy a copy, with the first edition already selling more than 200 copies.
News includes stories about projects and events at the school, accompanied by photographs, and there is also a competition page.
The team had their nerves tested on deadline day, making sure everything was complete before the first copies were printed. But clearly it worked as the pupils want to read all about it.
