ROLES were reversed at a Basingstoke secondary school when pupils took over for the day.
As part of National Takeover Day, youngsters at Everest Community Academy stepped into the roles of their teachers, taking classes and leading staff meetings.
Brad Kudirka and Teri Casey-Mitchell were chosen for the top jobs as principals of the school for the day.
Brad, 13, said: “We have been round the classrooms, checking how the classes are running, and we did a report on learning. We have had a busy day.
“I wanted the opportunity to further my skill of leading because it’s something I enjoy. I’ve seen what goes on behind the doors and found out that teachers manage the whole building, not just the learning in the classrooms.”
The pair held a briefing meeting for all staff in the morning.
Teri, 14, said: “I had to thank all the teachers who helped with the GCSE celebration evening and remind everyone about the two-minute silence. There were lots of teachers so it was a bit shocking, but it was a good experience. I know that I like leading and I thought this might be good to do.”
The two principals also welcomed guests to the school in Oxford Way, Popley, including motivational speaker Jim Roberson.
Angela Ashton, assistant vice-principal, said of the day: “It gives the pupils another perspective. Students have a particular opinion or view of teachers and only see them in the classroom. They don’t see the other side of the job like the administration and behind-the-scenes work.”

It’s interesting that the assistant vice-principal Angela Ashton was chosen to comment and not principal herself, that said, Angela Ashton has always been highly respected.
